Puppy to Gundog - month 3

Meg using her smelling sensesDue to 'The big Freeze' - the weather conditions have had an impact on the usual training regime, sessions have been limited and most of the daily training has taken place in the garden.

Meg is still retrieving the ball well, and her hunting skills are continuing to develop! We have been enquiring and researching into equipment available for training puppies, we recommend 'Quest Gundogs' for all your Gundogz needs!

Meg using her smelling sensesSadly, the season is drawing to an end - and the weather has had effect on most of the country, resulting with less 'game' on my table this winter-time! However, on the positive we have been promised an 'Indian summer' in 2010 - We can hope!!!!!

Gundogz would like to take this opportunity to promote your kennels, which could feature on our front page, send your articles to Info @Gundogz.co.uk

We look forward to hearing from you soon!!!

Puppy to Gundog - month 2

Meg the Cocker SpanielMeg has settled well into her surroundings. She has developed a strong bond with both myself and my other dogs.

She listens well and remains a playful and willing dog.

We have been using aids such as a tennis ball to encourage retrieving techniques, this is only completed 3 x daily and in a relaxed and playful manner.

To begin with, Meg just played around with the ball - but with consistency and a gentle voice tone , she did start to bring the ball back to me. Every day she improves with this `game`, even though she will try to hide the ball, a common act from a cocker spaniel!

Meg the Cocker SpanielMeg already responds well to her name, and commands used regularly such as `good girl`, she also displays the ability to find a hidden ball that has been bounced several times outside her kennel and then put into my pocket, she looks for the ball with `her nose to the ground`, the ball is then dropped when Meg is unaware, she finds the ball and returns the ball back to me with praise such as `good girl`! At present this just a game but with the intention to improve Megs hunting skills!

I believe my training skills work well, but i respect every trainer finds a method that works for them!

Puppy to Gundog - month 1
Gundogz Cocker Spaniel TrainingIn the forthcoming articles Gundogz will the showing you our step by step training of the newest member of the Bodrella kennels online. With up to date monthly information of `Megs` progress.
This will be available to all of you to view, giving you a chance to put your comments and suggestions to Gundogz.

The story so far,

Meg was born on 27th July 2009, she is an English Cocker Spaniel form working lines such as, Maesydderwen  Scimitar and Wernfrwd Dai Bach.

It was a priority for us to pick the pup from good working lines and field trial stock even though the dog will only be used for "rough shooting".

We have been settling `Meg` into her new surroundings, to assist this we have encouraged involment with fun games and spending lots of time with our children.
Gundogz Cocker Spaniel TrainingWe have learnt from previous experience that pups that have interaction with young children encourages good social skills, confidence and generally a happier dog and child !

We have been slowly introducing voice commands such as "Good girl, bad girl" and using the appropriate voice tones.

At present Meg is responding very well.

Next article will be posted 27 October 2009

Shooting

ShootingThe shooting of game birds, in particular pheasant, is a popular sport in the UK, on large, traditional driven shoots on estates and on small-scale rough shoots. Shooting of game birds is carried out using a shotgun, most often 12 and 20 bore or a .410, often on land managed by a gamekeeper.

Game birds are shot in different ways: Driven Game shooting, where beaters are employed to walk through woods and over moors or fields, dependent on the quarry and time of year and drive game towards a line of 8 - 10 standing guns standing about 50 or 60 metres apart. The guns will have paid in the region of £25 per bird for pheasants and much more for grouse, and the total bag (number of birds shot) will be anywhere between 80 and 400, again dependent on the budget and quarry. The day may be very formal, and the head gamekeeper or a shoot captain will oversee proceedings and great emphasis is placed on safety. Field Trials and Working Gundogs

Field Trials and Working Gundogs

Field Trial ChampionsField Trials have developed to test the working ability of Gundogs in competitive conditions. Trials resemble, as closely as possible, a day's shooting in the field and dogs are expected to work with all manner of game, from rabbits and hares, to partridges and pheasants.

Many of our best loved breeds were traditionally developed to help man in hunting. Labrador Retrievers gathered game in the field; Cocker Spaniels flushed and retrieved game; Pointers and Setters ranged over the fields helping us seek out birds and rabbits for the table. A great many still help us in shooting and hunting today.

The History of the Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel

Cocker SpanielsThere are several varieties of spaniel and some resemble its American cousin the American Cocker although its closer to the working-dog form of the Field Spaniel and the Springer Spaniel. The breed is usually known simply as the Cocker Spaniel.

These type dogs have been found in art and literature for almost 500 years. Initially spaniels in England were divided among land spaniels and water spaniels. The differentiation among the spaniels that led to the breeds that we see today did not begin until the mid 1800's during this time, the land spaniels became a bit more specialized and divisions among the types were made based upon weight. According to the 1840 encyclopaedia of Rural Sports, cockers were between 12 and 20 lb.
